Ethos of Cantilena Festival

The Cantilena Festival on Islay follows the Ethos of the original group, (see discography) to develop new and specific sounds and styles of playing both corporate and individual in an atmosphere and environment away from the pressures of a professional musician's life.
All the musicians of the original Cantilena, which was formed in 1970, have gone on to achieve much distinction in major positions in the musical world. All five string proffesionals involved in Cantilena Festival on Islay were core members of the original group and are driven by a powerful desire to share their ideas and passionate love of music making with the emerging generation.

Mission

To bring together a group of fine musicians to rehearse and perform works by the great composers in the most relaxed and informal surroundings

To champion the cause of youth both within the Cantilena group and with the participation of the people of Islay.

To break down the barriers between different musical cultures and make the Festival available to all.

To promote the fusion required for all music-making: the essential triangle between the composer, the performer and the listener.
